Student Project To Established NonprofitWhen the pandemic hit, Luke Whiteside, a 17-year-old high school student, began seeing the effects of the digital divide. There was a sudden need to access a laptop at home with everyone remote learning. Unfortunately, this was and is not possible for many lower-income families.
Given this new reality, Luke started a local project. First, he collected friends’ and families’ old laptops, turned these devices into working Chromebooks, and gave them to a local nonprofit. Then, seeing its incredible impact on his community and potentially the world, Luke met with Don Gentry to make it an established nonprofit. Two years later, we have a threefold business! First, we take old laptops, turn them into Chromebooks and give them to our strategic partners free of charge. Second, we offer e-waste solutions; we safely recycle old IT equipment with our R2 licensed Recycling Plant partners. Third, we offer VARS solutions to nonprofits at a discounted rate. |
